Event Management Internship; Caitlin's First Week.

Hi, I’m Caitlin. I’ve just started a work placement at Hall and Co Event Design as a Trainee Event Manager. Over the summer, I’ll keep updating on the bits I’m taking part in, the events I’m working at, the things I’m learning and what I’m finding a challenge along the way.

For the mean time, I thought I’d shed light on my degree. I’m studying Events Management at Sheffield Hallam University, or “party planning” as it has been described. So I’ve been wondering why, if events are happening everyday and require great knowledge, skill and experience to put on something amazing, why is this degree criticised so much? I find it hard to believe that some feel this “pointless degree” is failing undergraduates, like myself, by teaching us common sense. I mean, I disagree that styling, colour palettes, budgeting, managing stakeholders and staff, marketing, catering, pyrotechnics, theming, design and lighting, are common sense. Not only have I learnt this list and way more, I’ve gained my personal license, health and safety and food hygiene certificates by studying this degree. And it's even helped me get my first event job here!

I'm now hoping to apply what I've learnt at university to real life events, so it's a very exciting time for me! I can't wait to give more updates on everything I'm learning.
